Advice about Advice

The advice section has two purposes:

  1. To answer the common questions of anyone who has not hiked much, or maybe even never hiked, but is thinking of doing so
  2. To help intermediate hikers in search of ideas for improving their techniques or gear

Brian has been hiking for over twenty years and — like veterans of all things — has a whole bunch of ideas about what is right what is wrong. He readily professes to be no outdoor guide or guru…the entire point in writing this is in fact to show that you don’t have to be an exceptional outdoorsman, or even much of an athlete, to enjoy the benefits of being outdoors and specifically of hiking.

The site is intended for serious hikers of every experience level. The opinions held forth here are entirely those of either the site editor Brian and co-pilot Sylvia, and these opinions do not constitute the undisputed law of the universe. We would very much encourage anyone to seek out a variety of opinions on the subject matter and form your own opinions.

With that said we will present some suggestion for hikers on what to bring, how to bring it, how to prepare for it, what to do, what NOT to do and in general how to safely enjoy the outdoors.

Below, I have posted links to the sites of men and women with FAR more experience than our own upon the world’s great trails. These include Andrew Skurka, Cam Honan, William and Alexandra Mackesy of Walkopedia, and Besthike.com, edited by Rick McCharles. If our thoughts in any way run contrary to theirs I would ask you to discard what we say and believe them.
